Our Future
Dr. Ernest Leonard - Founder
Rev. Joseph Leonard - CEO |
In 1998, Dr. Ernest Leonard founded the Provision of Promise Economic Development Corp., which is known today as the Hope City Community Outreach Corp. As a Senior Pastor, Dr. Leonard saw up close the social woes of the inner city, such as homelessness, substance abuse, poverty, violence, and incarceration. His observation provoked an obligation to extend his service of leadership and influence beyond the pulpit, into the domestic affairs of the neighborhood.
In the winter of 1995, Dr. Leonard and his congregation purchased a 12 building complex in the heart of Newark, NJ. His goal was to provide transitional housing accommodations for the homeless; to offer training programs that would empower the beneficiaries with the knowledge and skill to transition from welfare to work. Later on, this complex would also make available a wide range of educational programs and recreational activities for youth. In fact, the Provision of Promise Academy, which served students from K-4 through 8th grade, had become a reputable and prestigious private school in the area. The school provided employment for upwards of 50 educators, health workers and custodians. On the 30th of September 2016, the street in which this complex once stood, was named "Dr. Ernest Leonard Way." This is how the city chose to express appreciation and acknowledgment for the exceptional public service and leadership of Dr. Ernest Leonard, in view of his passing in 2014. HCCOC - CEO Legacy of Glory Ministries - Sr. Pastor |
Because Jesus is our core, everything we do through the Hope City Community Outreach Corp. is meant to reflect God's heart. We love God, and we demonstrate our love and live out our faith by extending care to others — in Jesus' name — irrespective of caste, creed, class or religion. This way of living is modeled and shared with the beneficiaries of our programs in age-appropriate, culturally relevant ways without coercion, manipulation or forced compliance.
All our work is done in accord with the teaching of Jesus to love God and love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:36-40, NIV). From the time of my father's passing, it has been a sheer honor to carry on his legacy of faith and public service, and to now lead from the CEO capacity. HCCOC remains committed to its core values which include service and respect to others, going above and beyond the call to service, continuous learning, and striving to understand through attentive listening. There are three pillars to fulfilling our mission and keeping sight of our vision. |
Gabriel Leonard
HCCOC - Exec. Director Victory Community Church - Pastor |
Hello existing and potential Donors!,
My name is Gabriel Leonard and I serve as Exec. Director of Operations. My grandfather, the honorable Dr. Ernest Leonard, founded Legacy of Glory Ministries over sixty years ago; which is the founding organization of HCCOC. From that time 'til now, thousands of individuals and families have been positively impacted by our local-missions initiatives. Initiatives that we endeavor to expand in the coming year, for the immediate and neighboring cities in which we serve (Union, NJ/Brooklyn, NY/Sciota, PA/Willingboro, NJ/Atlanta, GA). We esteem and hold in high regard, the philanthropic contributions of companies, organizations, institutions and individuals in our area. We love the cities that we serve and we ask that you would consider partnership with us. History reveals the value of faith-based organizations, in addressing social needs. The fact is that faith-based organizations have long been integral to the safety network of services and resources in most communities, from church-sponsored emergency food pantries to affordable housing. We are focused on bridging cultural, religious, and political divisions to build a unified vision for change. We are a church built on fundamental Evangelical doctrines. However, we aspire to help cultivate a joint community initiative, to look beyond differences or perspectives and worldviews - for the common good of answering social problems, and meeting human needs of people from all walks of life. Crossing cultural, religious, and political divides can mobilize the greatest number and variety of resources and expertise with the goal of supporting healthier children, families, and communities. Diversity can also challenge us all to think outside our proverbial boxes and enhance our ability to create methods that are adaptable, flexible, and responsive to diverse needs. The contribution faith-based communities make in addressing complex social problems such as homelessness, substance abuse, poverty, welfare-to-work, violence, and incarceration is unexpendable. And we look forward to supplying our part in the restoration and prosperity of our beloved city. Here's what you can expect from us - respect and civility in dealing with differences; generosity of spirit and sharing of resources for greater impact; faith and determination that the partnership will lead to a greater good. Our CEO, Joseph Leonard, and the executive board members of Hope City Community Outreach Corp. appreciate the amazing work you may be currently involved in. Together, we can do more good. Let's maximize our efforts for exponential impact, that we may deliver more value to our children, families, and seniors. |
